Dr Sarah Boston

Hi, I’m Dr Sarah Boston, I am a veterinary surgical oncologist, stand up comedian, author, actor, podcaster and dog mom (not necessarily in that order).

How did this happen? Well, I’ll start at the beginning.

I decided to become a veterinarian when I was six years old due to my love for animals. I love all animals, but my focus when I was six and now is dogs and cats. I am very goal-oriented, so my plan stuck and I graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1996.

I continued to do advanced training in small animal surgery and surgical oncology and I am an ACVS board certified small animal surgeon and ACVS Founding Fellow of both Surgical Oncology and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. (It’s a lot of letters and my mom likes that very much.) Until recently, I spent the majority of my career in academia and was tenured faculty at the University of Guelph and the University of Florida.

Then things got interesting. Somewhere between Guelph and Gainesville I had thyroid cancer (I’m doing fine now. Thank you) and I started writing about it. Somehow, this journey turned into the bestselling memoir, LUCKY DOG: HOW BEING A VETERINARIAN SAVED MY LIFE, which was published by The House of Anansi in 2014. Despite the heavy topic (having and treating cancer), the book is funny. It will make you laugh and ugly cry in public. Writing this book made me realize how much I love comedy writing and creativity in general. This led to taking comedy classes at the Second City. I discovered my love for stand-up comedy and eventually I went full mid-life crisis and went to Humber College for two years in the Comedy Performance and Writing Program and graduated in 2023. I loved being in school again due to my extreme nerdy tendencies.

What am I doing now? I’m working as a veterinary surgical oncologist in private practice at the VCA Canada 404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital.  (If you would like me to see your pet, I am happy to, just have your veterinarian refer you to me.) I am also doing stand up around Toronto (YukYuks Rising Stars most consistently but other shows too), acting (okay, well I have an agent and I’m working on it….) and podcasting. I am fascinated by the intersection of medicine and comedy and the people who are in this space, so I started a podcast called Comedicine where I talk to healthcare professionals who do comedy. I also do stand up for veterinarians at conferences and I love all of it. Honestly, I am still figuring out how to make it all work together. I’ll keep you posted on that here.

In my spare time I hang out with the loves of my life, my husband, Steve and my dog, Earl.
